Pocket-sized tool is ‘first’ for testing live fibre optics

Fluke has announced what it claims is the first handheld tool for performing live tests on fibre optics and identifying polarity issues and failed transceivers. The FiberLert tool detects invisible near-infrared (850-1625nm) wavelengths used in fibre-optic communications to troubleshoot cables, ports, polarity and transceiver issues.

Designed for one-handed operation, the tool allows users to test for the presence of near infra-red light without needing complicated setups, or having to interpret data. When placed in front of an active fibre optic port or patch cord, the tester emits a continuous light and an optional tone.

“There are a lot of network engineers and technicians who need to test and troubleshoot fibre connections on an occasional basis, but lack the tools and expertise to do so,” explains Robert Luijten, Fluke Networks’ training manager and a test and measurement expert. “So, they are forced to guess as to the cause of a communication issue and replace components such as transceivers and patch cords in the hope of resolving the issue.”

The new tool removes the guesswork by indicating where signals are present, and where they are not. This allows users to pinpoint and remedy the cause of problems such as failed transceivers or patch cords. It supports single-mode, multi-mode, UPC/APC patch cords and ports, and can test without making contact with the port or patch cord, reducing the risk of contamination or damage.

Fluke claims that its new tool is unique in its ability to resolve the cause of the communications failures in fibre-optic networks.

A flashing LED indicates a powered-on condition and good battery. A timer shuts the tester off after five minutes of inactivity to prolong battery life.
