Williams upgrades wind tunnel controls in new partnership
Published:  10 March, 2021

B&R Industrial Automation is supplying the Formula 1 competitor Williams Racing with improved controls for its wind tunnel facility under a new technology and innovation partnership signed by the two companies.

The edge PLC hardware and I/O modules will measure and record energy consumption in the wind tunnel, and provide more granular control and management of the facility, located in Oxfordshire, UK. This is expected to result in reduced energy consumption, optimised preventative maintenance and increased business efficiencies.

The Aprol edge controller will allow decisions to be made faster using real-time and analytical data from equipment located across the facility, and augmenting that with increased data visibility to boost energy efficiency and productivity.

“Although they operate at the pinnacle of engineering, Williams Racing still face the same manufacturing challenges that we all encounter – a requirement to reduce energy usage and carbon footprint, whilst maintaining and improving asset effectiveness and availability,” says Jason Johnson, B&R’s business development manager for the UK, Ireland and Benelux. “We are delighted that Williams Racing have chosen the B&R Aprol platform as the basis for their digital strategy.”

B&R is part of ABB's Robotics and Discrete Automation business.
