Disconnect switch simplifies designs for global panel-builders
Published:  04 November, 2014

Rockwell Automation has announced a universal visible-blade disconnect switch that will help panel-builders to meet global standards, including UL, CSA, CE and CCC. Initially, the Allen-Bradley Bulletin 1494U disconnect switch is available in 30A, 60A and 100A ratings, and will be extended up to 600A next year.

As the switch isolates motors, motor controllers and other loads from a supply circuit, it provides visual confirmation that it is in the “on” or “off” position. It has a 30% smaller footprint than previous versions, while the switch, mechanism and multitap lugs together have a footprint that is almost 50% smaller than previous combinations.

Users can choose from several styles and options, including non-fusible or fusible versions. The fusible versions provide short-circuit protection. The switch can be operated by rods or cables. With the cable option, users can mount the switch anywhere in the panel, regardless of the location of the handle.

Safety can be enhanced using an optional back-of-hand protective cover for the line and load sides, and auxiliary contacts that notify status to a control system. The switch, operating mechanism and handle are connected at all times, whether the panel door is open or closed. Aluminium lugs are standard and accept copper or aluminium wiring. With the multiport lug connector, users do not have to wire through a distribution block and can connect wires directly to the disconnect switch.
