“Solid growth in the motion control market is aligned with the double-digit growth we are seeing in the robotics and machine vision industries,” says MCA vice-president, Dana Whalls. “Manufacturers and distributors are optimistic that we’ll see continued growth in 2014.”
Alex Shikany, MCA’s director of market analysis, reports that the first-half growth was driven by strong increases in sales of motion controllers, motors, and actuators/mechanical systems. “Motion controllers have been especially hot recently,” he adds. “Since the beginning of 2009, the motion controller category has averaged 19% growth per quarter through the second quarter of 2014.”
The strong second quarter followed a good first quarter with 8.4% growth to $764m. During the second quarter, sales of AC motors grew by 36.9%, motion controllers by 36%, and actuators/mechanical systems by 12.4%.
The MCA is a global not-for-profit trade group that promotes the understanding and use of motion control technologies and developing business opportunities for mechanical and electronic (mechatronics) motion control companies. Its members include manufacturers of motion control systems and components, systems integrators, distributors, end-users, consultants, academic institutions and research groups.
