High-efficiency IGBTs have `highest current density`
Published:  10 October, 2012

The power semiconductor specialist Ixys has announced a new range of high-power IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) modules which, it claims, offer the highest current density available. Compared to rival products , the Simbus F modules are said to reduce power losses and to improve energy efficiency.

The 17mm-high modules are aimed at applications such as high-efficiency motor drives, electric and hybrid vehicle drives, renewable energy converters, DC–DC converters and high-capacity power supplies. The 1.2kV modules are available in 225, 300 and 450A ratings.

The 17mm-high modules allow low stray-inductance insertion into various power circuits, thus reducing power losses. They are optimised for IGBT phase leg configurations.

“With continued investments in our technology, we are committed to provide our customers with energy-efficient solutions for power and motor control applications,” says Bradley Green, Ixys’ president of European sales and business development. “With the Simbus F outline, we address higher-power applications where, due to the operational power level, percentage points of improvement in efficiency have real tangible benefits to the user in saving energy.

Ixys is developing higher voltage and higher power versions and also offers customised, application-specific modules.
