Transmission chain `lasts six times as long`

Renold Chain has developed a new transmission chain that it claims will last twice as long as its previous best designs, and six times longer than its nearest rival products. In addition, the company says the new chain - called Renold Synergy - will withstand 20% higher bearing pressures and provide better fatigue performance and fretting corrosion resistance than earlier designs.

Renold has spent more than three years researching and developing the new chain using a variety of techniques including computer modelling and finite element analysis. The improved performance has been achieved by a combination of component features, thermal processes and assembly techniques which result in a chain with previously unattainable endurance.

Because the chain exhibits a much better bedding-in performance than earlier types, it may no longer be necessary to make running-in adjustments after it has been fitted. To simplify maintenance, the chain uses a gold-coloured connecting link, said to be easy to spot even in dirty applications.

Renold Chain`s marketing manager Andrew Freeman reports that the test results for the new chain were "even better than we had originally calculated". He says the Synergy name reflects the fact that that the chain "is greater than the sum of its component parts".
