`World`s smallest` linear actuator is four-in-one

Haydon Switch & Instrument claims to have produced the world`s smallest linear actuator - a 21mm square device that can deliver up to 4.5kg of thrust. By incorporating a rotating acme leadscrew into the motor`s rotor, the Size 8 actuator replaces four usually separate components - a motor, coupling, leadscrew and nut.

As the motor turns, the leadscrew rotates but does not advance. Instead, a mating nut moves along the screw. Haydon claims that this is the best design for obtaining linear travel in confined spaces. The absence of a shaft-to-leadscrew coupling is also said to save time and effort when assembling applications.

The actuator, which is suitable for precise, rapid positioning applications, is available in a variety of resolutions from 0.0015-0.04mm per step. The standard visible leadscrew length is about 10cm, but other lengths can be produced to order. The leadscrew end can be machined to allow bearing supports for long screws.

US-based Haydon has recently set up a European operation, Haydon Motion Europe, based in Nantes, France.
