`Substantial` investment boosts bespoke servo business

CT Dynamics, Control Techniques` rotary servo and controls division, is making "a substantial investment" to develop its bespoke business. The Andover-based company says that the move is a response to an upsurge in enquiries from customers in the UK and continental Europe for high-performance systems that cannot be satisfied using standard commercial products.

The investment is being used to upgrade CT`s electromagnetic, electrical and mechanical design capabilities for AC and DC brushed and brushless motors, and servo components.

In a recent example of the type of business the company hopes to build, it was asked by a robotics manufacturer to develop a series of small, precision motors for use in dynamic wrist and elbow axes of multi-tasking industrial robots. In response, CT developed a 67mm-frame brushless permanent magnet motor with a built-in brake and resolver feedback, which it has designed to deliver rapid acceleration and precise motion in a compact envelope. CT expects to sell thousands of these machines a year.

CT Dynamics grew out of Control Techniques acquisitions of Moore Reed and the Powerotor division of Evershed & Vignoles.
