• Westermo Data Communications has bought a majority stake in the Swedish-Norwegian industrial Ethernet specialist, Ontime Networks. The merger will give Westermo a more complete range of industrial communications products, from serial converters to Ethernet switches with integrated servers.

• Siemens Automation and Drives is collaborating with the business software giant, SAP, to supply systems that integrate MES (manufacturing execution systems) with business software. In a separate move, SAP has bought Pennsylvania-based Lighthammer Software Development Corporation, which supplies enterprise manufacturing intelligence and collaborative manufacturing software.

• Ametek has acquired patented technology from Xtreme Energy to produce high-efficiency, brushless, slotless DC motors that are said to deliver more power for their size than comparable motors. The technology includes proprietary winding geometries and motor construction techniques.

• Kaydon Corporation has sold its Power and Data Transmission Products Group to Moog for $72.4m. The Group consists of three companies located in Canada, the US, and Reading, UK, and its products include slip rings and fibre optic rotary joints. Its sales last year were $37.1m.

• The Gates Corporation has bought the German hydraulic tube connection system manufacturer Eifeler Maschinenbau (EMB) from Heitag Beteiligung. EMB has subsidiaries in Spain and China

• The Eaton Corporation has bought Hayward Industries` industrial filtration business, Hayward Filtration. The business has annual sales of around $100m and employs some 530 people worldwide. Eaton says it is a natural extension of its fluid power business.

• General Electric is buying Everest VIT, a remote industrial visual inspections company, from Welch Allyn. EVIT, located in New Jersey, will join German-based GE Inspection Technologies. It makes equipment that can enter machinery to look for flaws.

• Shibaura Mechatronics Corporation is transferring its Cartesian robot business - including its manufacturing, sales, and servicing operations - to Toshiba Machine.
