Chinese motor-maker Moons sets up UK operation
Published:  01 March, 2024

The Chinese motor manufacturer Moons Industries has set up a UK subsidiary based in Reading, Berkshire.

Moons, founded in 1994, claims to be one of the world’s three largest manufacturers of stepper motors. It also produces stepper drives, brushed and brushless DC motors, servodrives and motors, linear actuators and slides, integrated servomotors, condition-monitoring equipment, and lighting controls. It claims to ship more than 30 million motors every year, including 10 million hybrid steppers.

In 2014, Shanghai-headquartered Moons, which employs more than 3,000 people worldwide, formed a joint venture with the US motion control specialist Applied Motion Products. The following year, it bought the US motor manufacturer Lin Engineering. In 2019, Moons acquired the Swiss integrated motor manufacturer Technosoft Motion for CHF 31.2m (£28m).

Russell Cleasby has been appointed general manager of Moons’ Industries (UK). He has joined from Ametek where he was UK sales manager, responsible for its Dunkermotoren and MAE products, for 16 years. Earlier in his career he worked for Lenze and Bonfiglioli.

Moons has a wide portfolio of motors and motion control products

Moons’ current portfolio includes:
• slotless, brushless DC motors with 11 types of winding, and available in short, long and XL versions with three different power outputs;
• coreless brushed DC motors in six diameters from 8–24mm, with a hollow-rotor design for rapid acceleration and low rotational inertia, with no cogging or iron losses;
• multi-axis stepper drives with safety functions;
• integrated servomotors up to 550W which combine motors, drives and encoders; and
• flat Nema-frame stepper gearmotors with short axial lengths.
