‘Smallest’ radar distance sensor offers high accuracy
Published:  15 December, 2023

The German sensor-maker OndoSense has developed what it claims is the world’s smallest radar-based distance sensor. The reach sensor combines millimetre accuracy with high measuring speeds and a wide measuring range, to perform distance measurement, object detection and positioning applications.

The 92mm-long, M30-housed sensor is suitable for use in confined spaces and for short measuring distances. It offers a measurement accuracy of ±2mm, a measuring speed of 100Hz, and a range of 0.2–40m.

The IP67-protected device can be used in in challenging environments where dirt, smoke, steam, rain, poor light conditions or rough surfaces may be present.

“The OndoSense radar sensor enables production and efficiency gains in the automation of measurement tasks with high demands on accuracy and speed,” says OndoSense’s co-CEO, Rainer Waltersbacher. “I am thrilled with the performance of our new radar sensor and proud of the development work that the entire OndoSense team has done.”

OndoSense says that it radar distance sensor is the smallest of its type

With RS-485 communications, a 4-20mA analogue interface, and three digital switching outputs, the sensor can connect with PLCs. It can also link to networks such as Profinet via a gateway.
