Scalable motion controls support safety functions

Parker Hannifin has announced a pair of multi-axis motion controllers that combine machine logic, real-time motion control, safety functions and visualisation in a scalable format. The PAC120 and PAC340 controllers offer differing memory capacities, CPU performance, communication options and CNC functions to suit automation projects involving motion, synchronisation or positioning tasks.

The PAC120 provides Profinet I/O or Ethernet/IP options, as well as onboard Modbus TCP. The PAC340, intended for demanding, real-time, multi-axis applications, includes a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, and has built-in Profinet I/O and Ethernet IP.

The controllers are aimed at OEMs that build packaging, material-forming, printing or handling machines, as well as systems integrators supplying automation systems to the automotive, textile, papermaking and food and beverage industries.

Based on a robust, fan-less Arm CPU architecture, the controllers can be supplied with I/O modules that link signals in EtherCat networks. They use the vendor-independent Codesys SoftMotion platform for quick and easy programming based on the IEC 61131-3 and PLCopen Motion standards. All functions are integrated in a single user interface.

The modular architecture can be expanded to include safety controls and safety I/O modules that meet the requirements of the Machinery Directive, thus reducing the efforts of developing, verifying and approving safety applications.

The controls can be added to existing plant networks. There is an OPC UA server, and support for Modbus TCP, EtherCat and dual LAN networks. Ethernet/IP, Profinet and Profibus are options. An SD card slot and USB ports can be used to store process data locally and to exchange control programs.
