Panasonic enters motion controls with fast 32-axis device
Published:  19 May, 2022

Panasonic Industry has entered the motion controls market with a compact controller that combines motion functions with typical PLC functions such as positioning, networking, modular I/Os and a high-frequency counter. The company says that the GM1 controller will save cabinet space and can handle demanding applications with up to 32 axes and response times as low as 0.5ms.

The controller is aimed, in particular, at precision operations such as interpolation control where sensitive responses, are needed. It can deliver the high speed and accuracy needed for applications such press-fitting, moulding, printing or packaging.

The controller can handle functions such as rotary knife, flying shear, labelling, current control, palletising, cranks, cam motion and print mark control. It supports application function blocks which allow easy set-up of predefined functions, allowing faster programming at lower costs.

Programming is based on the Codesys IEC 61131-3 automation software and supports PLCopen functions and G-code editing. An axis configuration tool allows quick, precise programming of up to 32 axes. The controller is includes OPC UA client and server functions, making it easier to integrate into Industry 4.0 environments.

Panasonic’s GM1 is its first foray into motion controls

There are two independent Ethernet ports, support for Ethernet/IP and Modbus-TCP, a slot for 32GB SD memory cards, a two-channel (4/8Mhz) high-speed counter, and a four-channel PWM output (100kHz).

The controller is compatible with Panasonic’s existing controls, motors and its Minas A6 servodrive family.
