Timken buys Spinea to boost robotics and automation portfolio
Published:  03 May, 2022

The US bearings and power transmission manufacturer The Timken Company is buying the Slovakian company Spinea, which manufactures cycloidal reduction gears and actuators aimed at precision automation and robotics applications. Details of the transaction have not been released.

Privately owned and operated since its founding in 1994, Spinea is located in Presov, Slovakia. Its sales this year are expected to be worth around $40m.

“Spinea's well-established position in highly demanding robotics applications will increase our presence in the growing automation space,” says Timken president and CEO, Richard G. Kyle. “Spinea brings an exciting new product line with differentiated technology and state-of-the-art manufacturing to Timken. We plan to leverage our global capabilities to scale the business and introduce Spinea's next-generation solutions to customers around the world."

In recent years, Timken has diversified its portfolio by expanding its power transmission products and services. This includes the acquisitions of Rollon and Cone Drive, which offer next-generation technologies for robotics and automation applications. Timken says that Spinea complements Cone Drive’s precision gearing range and advances its product offering and commitment to customer-centric innovation. Spinea will boost Timken's position in automation, which was its second-largest market after renewable energy in 2021.

The transaction, which is subject to customary conditions, is expected to close soon and will be funded with cash on hand and borrowings from credit facilities.

Spinea’s portfolio includes the DriveSpin series of actuators which combine optimised servomotors and gears, resulting in compact dynamic, servo actuators with high tilting torque capacities
