For the trial project, Ericsson is supplying a secure 5G network operating on a private frequency, that will provide high-speed wireless connections with ultra-low latency. Porsche says that it heralds a new era of remote production in its factories.
The car-maker believes that the updated automation capabilities will have a significant impact on its production activities. They will allow massive amounts of data to be transmitted between machines, workers and vehicles, using secure, flexible and predictable real-time transmission.
“As we transition to the factory of tomorrow, Porsche production is undergoing a comprehensive digital transformation,” explains Albrecht Reimold, Porsche’s board member responsible for production and logistics. “5G technology is one of the key elements laying the groundwork for our smart factory.”
