Roller bearings 'will last ten times longer than rivals'
Published:  18 November, 2021

SKF has developed a seal for mounted tapered roller bearings that allows them to operate in contaminated environments for at least 600 hours – claimed to be 10 times longer than any rival product.

The Type E bearings are used when an increased thrust load is needed with limited axial movement in demanding applications such as belt feeders, screw conveyors, grinders, shredders and mixers.

These machines typically break down for one reason: seal failure. By improving seal performance, they can last much longer – extending uptime and increasing reliability.

According to SKF, users of these machines usually accept that contamination will inevitably lead to premature failure of the bearings. But by combining its bearing and seals expertise, the company claims that this no longer needs to be the case.

The new CR seals extend bearing service lives by almost eliminating the ingress of contamination, even under harsh conditions. The seals offer several lines of defence against contamination. They use hydrogenated nitrile rubber which resists both wear and high temperatures, while a rubber outside diameter improves static sealing within the housing. Multiple sealing lips exclude all types of contamination, including dirt, mud, water, sand, and powder. The seals also allow the bearings to be relubricated without risking damage to the sealing lips.

SKF says new seals have dramatically extended the performance and operating lives of its mounted tapered roller bearings

“In mud-slurry tests, our seal withstood more than 600 hours with zero contamination ingress,” reports Eric Brubaker, director of product management at SKF North America. “Rival products saw ingress at 50 hours or earlier. The seal performance surpasses that of our competitors by more than 10 times.”
