Revamped ETL site makes it easier to find efficient products
Published:  22 December, 2020

The UK Government has upgraded its Energy Technology List (ETL) Web site to simplify the purchasing of energy-efficient products including high-efficiency motors and variable-speed drives. Launched in 2001, the ETL provides information on energy-saving equipment, offering fast access to independently verified product data, with links to manufacturer Web sites. The ETL is owned by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

A new search and compare function helps users to find verified products that can cut energy bills and carbon emissions. For the first time, they will also be able to integrate all 14,000 qualified products into their procurement systems using an API. The site offers technical information, product images and the ability to search and filter products.

The ETL now also supports the Uniclass classification of products. This can be used to categorise and manage information within projects, such as costing and designing. Uniclass codes are used in computer-aided design (CAD) software and are required for use in Building Information Modelling (BIM) projects. Following requests from ETL users, BEIS has worked with NBS (the National Building Specification organisation) to map the 140 ETL product categories against Uniclass codes.

A survey of more than 500 UK SMEs commissioned by the Carbon Trust has revealed that more than half of them wanted to do more in terms of energy efficiency, citing reducing costs and energy consumption, and improving the environment, as the main benefits.
