Water-cooled motors deliver 40% more power than TEFC

ABB has announced a pair of water-cooled motors that, it says, will deliver an average of 40% more power than fan-cooled designs. The constant cooling of the AXW 315 and 400 IEC frame motors extends their insulation and bearing lives, thus boosting uptime. Their small footprints save space.

The water-cooled 180–1,100kW motors, available for direct-on-line and VSD operation in ratings up to 6.6kV, offer more W/kg than conventional TEFC (totally-enclosed fan-cooled) motors, making them smaller and lighter, but just as powerful. The cooling configuration consists of an optimised water jacket combined with an internal air-cooling loop for better heat distribution and dissipation. This design avoids hotspots and keeps internal temperatures more balanced.

“Water-cooling is a highly efficient method of transferring heat away from the motor without the need for an external fan,” says Charles Blankenship, ABB’s product manager for large AC motors. “The AXW is an ideal choice for dirty and dusty environments as environmental contaminates do not affect its cooling capability. The absence of a fan also reduces noise levels and does not blow dust into the air where people are working.”

The main terminal box and auxiliary box can be mounted in several positions to simplify installation and maintenance. Fewer spares are needed, cutting costs. A rigid frame design increases stability so that the motor has low vibrations and can meet stringent vibration limits.

The water-cooled motors are also available for the Nema market in the form of the 250-1,750hp AXW 5000 and 5800 models.
