Free BSI guide will help manufacturers to go digital
Published:  18 October, 2019

BSI has issued a free guide to help UK businesses to plan for digital transformation. Called PAS 1040:2019 Digital readiness – Adopting digital technologies in manufacturing – Guide, it will help them to assess and improve their readiness to adopt technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence), robotics, and the Internet of Things.

The guide supports the UK’s Industrial Strategy and the Made Smarter Review by helping businesses of any size to understand the areas they need to develop to increase value from adopting industrial digital technologies. It has been estimated that the wider use of digital technologies could be worth £455bn to UK manufacturing over the coming decade, as well as delivering productivity improvements of up to 25%.

The BSI PAS (Publicly Available Specification) offers guidance on identifying and understanding the factors to consider when planning and implementing the digital journey. It includes a standardised methodology for assessing the readiness of a business to adopt digital technologies, and to assess its progress.

The PAS is aimed at manufacturers, suppliers and others looking to increase their efficiency and competitiveness. It could also benefit developers and providers of digital readiness diagnostic tools.

In addition to its guide to digitalisation, BSI has issued a leaflet giving an introduction to the guide

“The digital readiness gap can be closed by the UK manufacturing sector,” says BSI’s manufacturing sector lead, Ben Sheridan. “It has the opportunity to adopt digital technology and make a change that will help to grow productivity and drive innovation. PAS 1040:2019 gives guidance intended to inspire business leaders to kick-start their digital transformation journey.”
