VSDs with motion controls simplify machine-building

ABB has added positioning control capabilities to its ACS880 variable-speed drives, avoiding the need for dedicated external motion controllers that require specific tools, user interfaces and programming languages. The same product family can now be used for positioning, speed or torque control across an entire production line. ABB says that embedding position control inside the drive will minimise machine engineering and installation work, remove the need for extra equipment, and cut the costs of training, tools and spare parts.

Another attraction is that dedicated motion controls typically have a maximum power rating of around 20kW. The ACS880 with embedded position control offers a power range up to 5.6MW, as well as regenerative and encoderless positioning capabilities. The drives support most motor, feedback and communications protocols.

The motion control capabilities include pre-programmed functions such as homing modes, absolute and relative positioning, profiled positioning, position synchronising and fast position latching. The motion functions are available through a simple parameter interface. They can be modified and extended using PLCopen motion blocks based on IEC 61131.

The VSDs’ motion control capabilities have been tested in a variety of applications including cranes, presses, rotary tables, and sorting and packaging systems. “These tests have proven the drives’ high performance and flexibility,” reports ABB’s global product manager for drives, Tuomo Tarula.
