Low-cost modular motors cut delivery times 'by weeks’
Published:  05 April, 2016

ABB has announced a range of large modular induction motors with delivery times that, it claims, are several weeks shorter than those for more highly specified machines. The low-cost NMI motors, spanning ratings from 315kW to 8MW in frame sizes 400–630, are aimed at safe-area pump and fan applications that do not need highly specified motors.

The motors are said to pack more power per kilogram, allowing smaller frame sizes to be specified. For example, a four-pole, 3.5MW motor weighs eight tonnes – 20–25% lighter than most comparable motors. The motor’s compact size and light weight reduce the installation space and the equipment needed to lift it on site.

ABB is achieving the rapid deliveries using a pre-engineered platform in which all drawings and designs are standardised and pre-packaged. Customers can access 2D and 3D drawings during the order-to-delivery process using ABB’s online DocStage system for sharing and managing documentation.

“Our pre-engineered platform is mid-way between a custom-made motor and an off-the-shelf motor,” explains Carl Nilsson, ABB’s global product manager for large motors. “By having all documentation ready, we cut the design stage significantly. We are able to source component parts that are already manufactured in our factories.”

The modular NMI motor is optimised for power and water industry applications

Delivery times are reduced by offering a limited choice of accessories, such as temperature monitors, vibration detectors and differential protection. Additional accessories would need more engineering time, and are not always needed for pump and fan applications.

The motors are available in 2–12 pole versions, and in operating voltages up to 10kV at 50/60Hz. Standard ambient operating temperatures are from –20 to +40°C, with optional designs down to –40 and up to +55°C.

The motors' modular construction is scalable. For example, different bearing types can be fitted, and air-to-water or air-to-air cooling specified.
