Low-cost concept takes Ethernet to the sensor level

Innovasic, the US developer of industrial Ethernet silicon products, has demonstrated a “low-complexity” Ethernet concept designed to take Ethernet to the edge of industrial, building, transport and automotive networks.

Innovasic’s low-complexity Ethernet node minimises power, size and costs, enabling even the simplest devices – such as sensors and switches – to be connected directly to Ethernet networks without needing a processor.

On the network side, the node will participate in any 10/100/1000 Ethernet network and coexist with any industrial Ethernet protocol, including Profinet and EtherNet/IP. Innovasic expects future versions to support new two-wire Ethernet automation standards, offering a cost-effective, low-power Ethernet-based alternative to 4–20mA and Hart networks.

“With the advent of the Industrial Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 comes the compelling case to bring Ethernet to the edge of mission-critical networks,” says Innovasic CEO, Keith Prettyjohns.  “But, until now, Ethernet has been too costly to bring to the simplest ‘things’ like sensors, switches and actuators. We are excited to demonstrate this new technology that promises to break the traditional cost and complexity barriers of Ethernet.”

Innovasic demonstrated its technology at the recent SPS IPC Drives exhibition in Germany on the ODVA stand and on the Profinet and Profibus International stand.
