Motion specialist takes control at ultrasonics firm
Published:  09 June, 2015

The Basingstoke-based motion technology specialist, LG Motion, has acquired a controlling interest in the Dorchester-based ultrasonic measurement equipment manufacturer, Precision Acoustics.

Precision Acoustics’ founder and managing director Terri Gill is retiring from the business. Shareholders and research scientists Dr Andrew Hurrell and Dr Paul Morris will maintain their involvement in the company, continuing to oversee its r&d activities. They now co-own the business with LG Motion.

Precision Acoustics has 15 employees and annual sales in excess of £1.5m, with more than 75% of this coming from exports. The company has more than 25 years’ experience in acoustic measurement equipment, with products including hydrophones, ultrasonic transducers and scanning tanks. The company will continue to develop and produce its acoustic and ultrasound components in Dorchester.

“This is an excellent addition for LG Motion, and firmly strengthens our position as a market leader in the production of acoustic scanning tanks and motion technology,” says LG’s managing director, Gary Livingstone. “The move allows us to offer our customers a wider product portfolio, particularly in our positioning and scanning solutions. We believe this is the beginning of Precision Acoustics setting a new benchmark in the ultrasound measurement market in terms of product performance and customer service.”

“I couldn’t be happier with the new partnership following LG Motion’s acquisition,” says Gill. “The potential synergy – particularly in mechanical and electronic motion control – will help drive the technology and product development skills of both companies.”
