Modules will allow drives-makers to support any profile
Published:  12 May, 2015

The Swedish industrial communications specialist HMS Industrial Networks has announced an extension to its Anybus CompactCom 40-series that will make it easier for drives manufacturers to comply with profile specifications such as PROFIdrive, EtherCat DS402, and transparent DS402 on other networks.

Developing and maintaining connections for different networks is time-consuming and resource-demanding for drives-makers – especially if they want to comply with drive and motion profiles for several different networks. Now, by integrating support for Anybus CompactCom into their drives, they will be able to offer wide range of fieldbus and industrial Ethernet connections, along with support for different drives profiles, in a single development project.

Different networks have different standards for how to communicate with a drive – for example, telling it to operate at a certain speed. HMS supports these drive or motion profiles via a Profile Driver Package – a software stack that is built into the drive during development. This source code can be integrated quickly into the processor of any drive.

The profile-specific data is not “translated” inside the Anybus CompactCom. Instead, it passes through the module’s transparent channel unchanged and the conversion is done in the drive using the Profile Driver Package.

The DS402-based Profile Driver can handle any CAN-based profile – not just drives and motion profiles – on any network. Examples include:

• EtherNet/IP: Transparent DS402

HMS' development will allow drives-makers to tailor their products to support different profiles

• EtherCat: DS402, SEMI, Encoder

• Profinet/Profibus: PROFIdrive

HMS’ Anybus CompactCom 40-series will allow drives manufacturers to comply with all major networks, even high-performance standards such as EtherCat and Profinet 2.31. It is designed for demanding applications requiring low latency and high data throughput. The process data latency is lower than 15µs, and 1,500 bytes of process data can be transferred in each direction.

The 40-series products are pre-certified for network conformance by the major network organisations, thus speeding up testing and compliance.
