Published:  07 April, 2014

The Swiss EMC specialist Schaffner has acquired has acquired the US businesses Transformer Engineering (Trenco), Magnetics Technologies and Transformer Real Estate. It is paying their parent, Transformer Holding, around CHF9m ($10.1m) for the operations.

Trenco, founded in 1937, develops and manufactures customised power magnetics systems, mainly for customers in Schaffner’s target markets, which include variable speed drives, rail technologies and renewable energy systems. In 2013, the US business, which has 70 employees, generated sales worth around CHF12m ($13.5m).

Trenco, which has a patented 18-pulse transformer technology, is being renamed Schaffner Trenco and will become part of the Schaffner’s Power Magnetics division. It will continue to operate under the same management at its Cleveland, Ohio site.

Trenco specialises in customised power magnetic systems

Schaffner says that the acquisition strengthens its presence in the US power magnetics and power quality markets, while complementing its global products portfolio. The deal will also provide Trenco with access to Schaffner’s manufacturing operations, complementary products and technologies such as water-cooled systems.
