IE5 permanent magnet motor will make Hannover debut
Published:  13 March, 2014

At next month’s Hannover Fair, the Brazilian motor manufacturer WEG is launching an “IE5” permanent-magnet (PM) motor with a rated efficiency of 96.6% and “significantly” lower losses than IE4 motors. This is one of several new ranges that WEG is premiering at the event, including IE4 explosion-proof motors.

The IE5-rated PM motor is part of WEG’s W22 series and will be among the first commercially available motors that conform to the recently formulated criteria for a potential IE5 energy efficiency class. The motor is said to exhibit lower losses than its predecessor, the W22 Super Premium induction motor, which WEG launched in late 2012, making it one of the first manufacturers to offer motors conforming to the then unratified IE4 standard. The IEC has only recently published a standard defining IE4.

Another WEG innovation at this year’s Hannover Fair will be the upgraded W22x series of explosion-proof motors, which will now be available in IE4 versions on request, as well as standard IE2 and IE3 efficiency classes.

Until now, special applications such as explosion protection have been exempt from the efficiency regulations for standard induction motors. WEG says it is offering motor users the option of high efficiencies in this demanding application area as well.

At Hannover, WEG will also be showing high-performance gearboxes and gear-motors from its Austrian subsidiary, Watt Drive.

The Hannover Fair runs from 7–11 April in Hannover, Germany.
