Modular LV motors have internal cooling ribs

At next month's SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany, Siemens Drive Technologies will unveil a new low-voltage motor design without any external cooling ribs. Instead, the Simotics FD (flexible duty) motors use internal cooling ribs which locate the cooling close to the heat source inside the frame (the laminated core surface), and support various types of air and water cooling, including open and enclosed types with natural or separate ventilation. The portfolio will include water-cooled types with cooling jackets or air-to-water heat exchangers.

The compact motors span ratings from 200kW to more than 1.6MW. They are optimised for inverter-fed operation and, in particular, for use with Siemens' Sinamics LV inverters. The motor's rated currents are adapted to the inverter's output currents, and they are dimensioned for the rated pulse frequency of the inverters. This avoids over-sizing of the inverter and ensures that the voltage is used optimally.

In many constant-torque applications, the motors can be coupled to gearboxes to offer systems with high power densities, small installation volumes and low noise levels.

The motors' modular design supports various terminal box mounting positions, separate fans, and monitoring systems. The terminal boxes are up to 230% bigger than normal, making them easy to use. The motors' cast-iron frames make them suitable for use in adverse conditions.
