The German RFID specialist iDtronic had developed “the world’s first” cylindrical UHF RFID (radio frequency identification) antenna, specifically for use in industrial automation applications. The company believes that RFID systems operating in the UHF band (840–960MHz) – rather than the more usual 125kHz or 13.56MHz frequencies – represent the future for industrial automation RFID applications such as production and material-handling control, and tracking and tracing.

The 60mm-long Bluebox UHF antennae (above) have stainless-steel housings and 2m-long cables. They can identify objects at reading distances of up to 20cm. Their accuracy and reading range means that over-reach readings can be avoided. The IP65-protected antennae have space-saving M30 housings and can be integrated easily into many existing installations.

The antennae will allow RFID process chains that use only UHF to be implemented from goods receipt, through production, to goods issue.

iDtronic is working on its first project using the new antennae – an airport luggage-handling system. The installation is due to be commissioned this year.
