DeviceNet unites modular starter system

Rockwell has developed a modular system that allows motor starters and other items to be linked into a DeviceNet bus network, reducing the need for wiring.

The Allen-Bradley DeviceNet Starter Auxiliary (DSA) system consists of a main control module and up to 16 others, including sensor input and I/O modules. The control module, which also acts as a power supply, is said to be the industry`s first gland-mounting I/O system.

The IP66 gland plates allow a combination of DSA modules to be assembled in standard enclosures. Starter modules, capable of switching up to 5A, are available in AC or DC versions. They are designed to control the starter via the network.

Rockwell says that the DSA system is particularly suitable for conveyor and materials-handling applications, where there is a trend to locate starters next to motors. It will also meet the growing need for "intelligent" motor control centres which offer improved levels of diagnostics and alarm functions
