Fuse module `cuts starter installation times`

Cooper Bussmann has developed a fuse-based over-current protection module, designed to be used with contactors and overload relays. It claims that this combination provides a modular alternative to fuse-less systems based on motor protection circuit breakers. The company also asserts that when used with groups of motor starters, the system will reduce wiring times "significantly".

The 45mm-wide Optima OPM-NG module is the same width as a 32A IEC motor starter. The IP20 finger-safe fuseholder is designed to be installed without tools and incorporates a DIN-rail spring. A handle built into the fuse carrier acts as a fuse-puller, eliminating the need for a fuse removal tool.

The fuses are grouped together in a single carrier, helping to minimise heat problems. To prevent the loss of components, the carriage cannot be removed from the holder. An optional auxiliary contact switch can be used to show the carriage position and to open the contactor control circuit when the carrier drawer is open.

The module, which complies with IEC 60947-3, accepts IEC or North American fuses.
