THK and Parker team up to offer linear packages

The linear guide specialist THK has joined forces with Parker Digiplan to offer ready-assembled packages that combine linear actuators with motors, drives and cabling.

The packaged product, called KRE (shown above), marries THK`s KR actuators, available in heights from 22-65mm, with Parker stepper or servo motors, and DIN-rail stepper drives or ViX servo drives.

THK`s business development manger Bob Hughes explains that one reason for the move is to provide a new area for growth. The company has set itself the goal of doubling its UK turnover within five years, but the machine tools market which has traditionally been a big slice of its business has shrunk dramatically. Another important market, semiconductor production is also suffering.

To boost its sales, THK therefore has to "add value to its existing products", says Hughes. Instead of selling a £400 slide, it will now be able to sell the combined actuator and drive for £1,500-2,000, he explains.

At the same time, the combined packages will suit many customers who have been cutting back on their in-house skills and "don`t want to put together a bag of bits," Hughes continues.

THK talked to several potential partners before choosing to work with Parker. Hughes sees the deal as being mutually beneficial: THK`s large sales force "will give Parker a lot of exposure," he predicts.

In addition to the main actuator, motor and drive components, THK will be offering options such as brakes, gearboxes and HMIs. Hughes says that the lead time will typically be three to four weeks.
