`Smallest` encoder `cuts costs by 40%`

Agilent Technologies has unveiled a high-speed absolute encoder which it claims is the world`s smallest. It also asserts that the modular device will halve assembly times, cut costs by up to 40%, and eliminate the need for repeated alignment adjustments.

The AEAS-7000 encoder (above), which is based on technology that Agilent bought from the German company Optolab Microsystems earlier this year, is said to reduce the number of components needed for an encoder from around 80 to just four.

The encoder is suitable for high-speed servo applications up to 12,000 rpm, and is capable of resolutions from 12 to 16 bits.
