Electric actuator challenges hydraulics

Parker Hannifin has launched a high-power electric linear actuator which can replace hydraulic rams in many applications. The company`s Electro-Thrust actuator, which can produce forces of up to 44.5kN, is smaller than an equivalent hydraulic actuator and power pack, avoids the problems of leakages, and is easier to maintain.

Moreover, for applications requiring accurate positioning, it avoids the hydraulic cylinders` need for expensive position sensing and servo valve controls.

The servo-driven electric cylinder system, available in the UK from Unimatic Engineers and others, comes in a 125mm frame size and with ballscrews up to 50mm in diameter. It provides stroke lengths from 100-2,000mm and can operate at speeds of up to 1m/s. Its maximum acceleration is 10mm/s² and its positioning accuracy is typically ±0.013mm.
