Solid-state controller replaces several components

A solid-state power controller introduced by E-T-A Circuit Breakers is said to combine with performance of a self-limiting electronic switching relay, with the optimised over-current protection of a circuit-breaker. The all-in-one controller, which can control resistive, capacitive and inductive loads drawing from 1-25A, can replace several conventional components and their interconnections.

The E-1048-8XX module can detect overloads and short circuits and has a tripping characteristic similar to that of a high-quality circuit breaker. The load circuit is monitored continuously for breakages, even when the load is off. As well as resisting shock and vibration, the "wear-free" electronic controller is also said to use less power than electromechanical relays.

The controllers are available in two formats: an 11.5mm-wide rail-mounting module; and a version which plugs into standard relay sockets. The controllers, which operate from 9-36V DC supplies, can be wired in parallel to switch loads above 25A. Options include diagnostic LEDs and electronic status signals.
