Sensor displays are a digital first

The German sensing specialist Microsonic claims to have developed the first ultrasonic sensor with a built-in LED readout. The company`s mic+ sensors also squeeze in two set-up buttons. The three-digit display provides both alphabetical messages and numerical distance read-outs and, in operation, alternates between mm and cm displays.

The non-contact sensors, available in the UK from Balluff, provide a resolution of 0.18mm for objects in the sensing range of 30mm to 8m. They have cylindrical M30 housings and are just 84mm long.

The sensors set their analogue outputs automatically to 4-20mA or 0-10V, depending on the load. Switching distances and window limits can be set using the readout without needing auxiliary reflectors or the presence of a scanned object.

The sensors, which have internal temperature compensation, cover five detection ranges and offer four output options, including combined switched and analogue outputs for applications requiring limit monitoring as well as a proportional distance signal. By the end of this year, more than 100 versions will be available.
