Cylinder production ends in Watford after 40 years

Parker Hannifin is planning to end production of hydraulic accumulators and tie-rod cylinders at its Cylinder Division site in Watford, Hertfordshire, and move the manufacturing operation to its Hellaby, Yorkshire, plant.

Parker, which has been manufacturing cylinders in Watford for more than 40 years, says there is uncertainty about the site`s lease and that it has been experiencing increasing difficulties in attracting suitable employees because of the decline in manufacturing in the Watford area.

The Watford site employs 50 people, of which 32 may lose their jobs. Parker is consulting with them and their representatives. The company plans to keep the cylinder division`s headquarters and business development functions in Watford.

Parker says that up to 18 new jobs could be created at the Hellaby plant to cater for the expanded manufacturing and support facilities.

Parker recently announced plans to end production of pneumatic products at its Cannock, Staffordshire, site.
