Capacitive encoder challenges resolvers

Sick has developed a high-resolution capacitive encoder for brushless servo applications which, it predicts, will persuade users to move away from conventional resolvers. The SEK52 encoder offers 16 sin/cosine periods compared to the one in a resolver, giving it a resolution 16 times higher, at a "competitive" price.

The new encoder is said to be as robust as a resolver. It incorporates a Hiperface interface and an "electronic label" which stores information about the associated motor, such as its peak torque and current, and its speed characteristics. The label makes it much easier and quicker to commission a drive because there is no need to enter the motor details manually.
