Encoder sports a USB port

Newall Measurement Systems, one of a handful of British exhibitors at the recent SPS/IPC/Drives show, used the event to launch what it claims is the first linear encoder with a direct USB interface.

The DSG-UB encoder can be plugged straight into a PC or laptop, without needing an in-line converter. It is powered from the PC`s USB port, avoiding the need for interface or counter cards, although for multi-axis applications a powered USB hub may be needed to provide extra power.

The encoder, which offers a resolution of 1µm and an accuracy of ±10µm, is supplied with drivers and application software that provides a simple single-axis linear position display on the PC screen. It is available with scales range from 5mm to 12m in length.
