Tyco emerges as the buyer of Crompton Small Motors

Drives & Controls has learned that the mysterious buyer of Brook Crompton`s fractional horsepower motors business is the Bermuda-based conglomerate Tyco.

Invensys has refused to reveal who has bought the Doncaster-based business, which it sold at the same time as the main Brook Crompton operation. Tyco has a policy of not disclosing its acquisitions below a certain size.

Crompton Small Motors makes AC motors in the range 5-1,500W, mostly for the OEM market. It will form part of Tyco`s Electronics operation.

Although Tyco has not officially acknowledged that it is the new owner, it admits that the Crompton motors now form part of its product portfolio. Tony Gatt, Tyco Electronics` vice-president for the EMEA global industrial and commercial business unit, says that the motors "will add a new dimension to our current product range".

He adds that the products will give Tyco "the opportunity for further organic growth, with sales potential outside the UK where the Crompton Small Motors brand has had limited sales and marketing exposure".

Tyco`s vast portfolio already includes Crompton Instruments, which makes relays and protection relays.
