I/O terminal controls stepper motors up to 8A

02 March, 2012

Beckhoff has developed a module that can drive stepper motors rated up to 8A, 80V DC, directly from an I/O system. The EL7051 EtherCAT stepper motor terminal contains both motor outputs and feedback inputs. In simple applications, an internal counter can eliminate the need for feedback.

The terminal includes two limit switch inputs and PWM (pulse-width modulation) output stages that cover a wide range of voltages and currents. The terminal can be adapted to a motor and its application by setting a few parameters in an object directory, using software such as Beckhoff’s TwinCat System Manager. The 64-fold microstepping capabilities ensure quiet and precise motor operation.

The stepper module integrates into Beckhoff’s EtherCat terminal system, which provides functions such as advanced diagnostics and distributed clocks. Integration into the I/O system simplifies cabling and commissioning and cuts cabinet space requirements and costs.

The terminals can be used with Beckhoff’s AS1060 stepper motors to provide a compact, low-cost drives for applications such as feed axes or simple transport and stroke movements.
