Distance sensor pioneers a modular platform

At the recent SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany, Sick unveiled the first device based on a new modular platform for distance sensors for positioning applications. The first device to use the platform is a laser sensor that covers distances from 0.15–300m with an adjustable resolution of 0.1–100mm, and offers accuracies of ±2–3mm and reproducibility values of ±0.5–2mm, depending on the measurement range.

The DL100 Hi sensor (above) uses the time-of-flight principle and is said to be suitable for dynamic applications involving acceleration values up to 15m2/s. Sick says that this will allow faster operation, resulting is shorter operating cycles and improved productivity and cost-effectiveness.

The IP65-protected sensor has a metal housing. Interface options include RS-422, SSI and Profibus DP. Configuration is done via an Ethernet connection which also serves as a diagnostic interface, allowing remote maintenance.
