Motors portfolio gets a new name

03 January, 2012

Siemens has unveiled a new branding for its motor products. At the recent SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany, Ralf-Michael Franke, CEO of Siemens Drive Technologies, announced that, in future, all of its motors will be sold under the Simotics brand. This will bring them in line with the company’s inverters, which carry the Sinamics name, and its control products, which use the Simatic, Simotion and Sinumerik brands.

The Simotics family includes low-voltage motors for mains and inverter operation, explosion-protected motors, servomotors, linear motors, as well as DC and high-voltage motors. Franke says that by matching other drive components, the motors will “help to reduce the complexity of choosing the right motor, saving our customers costs and valuable time”.

The first products to carry the new name are two small torque motors called Simotics T 1FW6 (shown above), which extend the lowest ratings of this range down to 22Nm. The low-speed permanent magnet synchronous motors are designed for use as direct drives for axes that require dynamic responses, coupled with high precision and torque. The motors, which can be cooled naturally or using water, can replace conventional motor-gear combinations in confined spaces.

♦  Franke also revealed at the SPS show that Siemens’ drives business grew by 30% last year.
