Industrial router supports next-generation broadband

16 December, 2010

Westermo has announced the world’s first VDSL2 broadband router for industrial applications. The Falcon router is designed to provide high-speed, secure two-way communication between remote sites, to connect equipment such as Scada, PLCs, RTUs and I/O devices.

The Falcon is based on the high-bandwidth VDSL2 (Very-high-speed Digital Subscriber Line 2) standard. Upstream and downstream data rates of 100Mbit/s are possible, depending on service provider bandwidth.

Upstream speeds can be up to 40 times faster than standard ADSL broadband, making VDSL2 ideal for remote access applications requiring high uplink speeds. In particular, it is suitable for applications requiring live video images to be sent from remote sites.

The Falcon (above), which has a built-in four-port Ethernet routing switch, has a rugged metal housing incorporating a vibration-proof DIN-rail clip. It has an expected service life of at least ten years. It can be powered from sources from 16–60V DC.

A built-in device server interface can be used to connect to existing serial devices, supporting migration from older systems to new IP-based versions without needing to replace the equipment. The router is compatible with ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ broadband technologies.
