Helical-bevel gears deliver `twice the power per volume`

At next month’s SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany, Stober will be unveiling a new range of right-angle helical-bevel gears which, it says, represent a dramatic reduction in size, resulting in an increase in power per unit volume of more than 100% compared to previous designs.

To achieve this performance from a smaller package, the KL range incorporates a newly developed two-stage gearset geometry – with a bevel wheel input and a spur gear output – that operates with an efficiency of 97%.

The Size 1 version is just 113.5mm long, 81mm wide, and 90mm deep and occupies a volume of just 0.83 litres. The Size 2 version is 143.5mm long, 98mm wide and 108mm deep, and occupies 1.52 litres. The compact housings also result in significant weight reductions, which is a particular advantage for travelling drives. The gears can handle input speeds of up to 6,000 rpm in cyclic operation, and have torque ratings up to 65Nm.

The stiff gears need no offset, simplifying the design of machines and systems. On the output side, there are various options for output shafts and mounting methods. Third-party motors can be fitted using adapters with backlash-free plug-in connectors and thermal length compensation. Stober expects the compact gears to be particularly attractive for packaging machinery applications.
