Former managers save Control Engineering from closure

30 April, 2010

A US company set up by two former publishers with the Reed Business Group has bought the Control Engineering, Plant Engineering and Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazines and other assets, which Reed announced recently it was closing because it could not find a buyer for them. The new owner, CFE Media, based outside Chicago, says it is planning “a quick and timely rejuvenation of the engineering community’s premium research and information source”. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

“We are extremely excited to re-launch and re-energise the brands that have meant so much to so many engineers over the years,” says CFE Media’s president, Jim Langhenry, who set up the new company with Steven Rourke. “Our top priority under new ownership will focus on providing high-value, high-demand content to a targeted engineering audience in the ever-evolving ways they want consume the information.”

He adds that many of the previous editorial, sales and operations personnel will be part of the new team as the brands are re-positioned for future growth. All three titles will be enhanced with new investment and will publish June/July issues. An online presence will be launched at the same time.

Under Reed’s ownership, Control Engineering had a combined monthly magazine, newsletter and Web site audience of 343,000 people, Plant Engineering 186,000, and Consulting-Specifying Engineer 157,000.
