Automation kits cut machine-building costs

Parker Hannifin has launched a range of modular automation and robotics kits – ranging from simple twin-axis assemblies, through to integrated multi-axis gantry and palletising robots – which, it says, will help manufacturers to cut production costs, while improving their productivity and profitability. Parker is also offering a custom design and engineering facility for applications where standard systems are unsuitable.

“This new approach has the potential to revolutionise the way in which many automation systems are developed and used,” says Parker`s UK platform marketing manager, Andy Parker-Bates. It will give users the ability to build complete systems or sub-systems quickly and at relatively low cost, without the need for specialised engineering or the associated downtime while production lines are being modified.

The kits will also make it easier to justify the costs of automating existing low-volume manual or semi-automated processes, enabling labour to be redeployed elsewhere, Parker-Bates adds. Unlike traditional methods of building modular systems,the kits are available on relatively short lead-times and are designed for self-assembly on-site by the customer or, if required, by Parker engineers.

The kits typically include all of the components – including the framework, motors, gearboxes, drives, sensors and cables – needed to build simple linear handling systems. They can be extended by adding extra modules. Complex multi-axis gantry, assembly or packaging systems with sophisticated controls, can be built quickly, either on-site or at a Parker factory for delivery as pre-configured and tested systems.
 
The kits are based on standard Parker electromechanical, pneumatic, drive and control technologies. They can deliver speeds of up to 5m/s over long stroke lengths, with precision and repeatability typically to within 0.05mm, and load handling up to 1,600kg.
