Linear transport system is based on permanent magnets

Spanish researchers are developing a linear transport system powered by permanent magnets. The system – being developed by Novateq Guerrero, a technology company that has its origins in Almeria University – is said to be cheap, clean and to need few people to operate.

The technology, which is still at the prototype stage, is aimed at applications that require objects to be moved in a straight line along established routes. Examples of potential applications include moving pedestrian walkways, propulsion on assembly and product-handling lines, moving envelopes in sorting offices, and transport systems in tunnels.

The driving force is based on the combined attractive and repulsive forces produced by powerful rare-earth magnets modified with steel alloys. The researchers say that the system will have a long operating life and will require only minimal mechanical maintenance and lubrication.
