Ametek adds Motion Control Group to its portfolio
Published:  27 February, 2008

The electronics and electromechanical conglomerate Ametek has bought the US customised motors and motion control specialist, the Motion Control Group, for an undisclosed sum. MCG, which has manufacturing plants in Minnesota and China, produces small brushed and brushless servo motors and drives. Its annual sales are worth around $26m.

MCG will join Ametek’s Technical & Industrial Products (TIP) division, which already produces brushed and brushless DC motors, hybrid stepper motors, slotless motors, motor controls, blowers, fans and pumps. TIP is part of Ametek’s Electromechanical Group which had sales last year worth around $937m.

"MCG enjoys a strong reputation with its customers, has solid engineering capabilities, and is an excellent strategic fit with our highly differentiated technical motor business, sharing common markets, customers, distribution channels and motor platforms," says Ametek CEO, Frank Hermance.

"MCG greatly enhances our capability in providing precision motion technology solutions," he adds. "Its brush-commutated and brushless DC motors complement our existing motor business, while its linear motor line further broadens the range of solutions we offer the motion control market."

MCG began life in 1961 with the founding of Tachtronic Instruments, which later merged with Control Motion Inc. Initially, the company supplied components for critical military and aerospace applications before broadening its activities to become a supplier to industrial and commercial OEMs. It claims to have been a pioneer in the design and commercialisation of brushed and brushless servomotor technologies.
