Compact, integrated motors are `first to support Ethernet`

Berger Lahr claims that it is the first motor manufacturer to offer small, integrated drives with built-in Ethernet connections. It says that, as a result, integrated motors with ratings of less than 350W can, for the first time, implement synchronous operating modes in multi-axis applications, such as electronic gears and cams, cross-cutting and flying shears.

The Schneider Electric subsidiary has added industrial Ethernet support to its IcIA family of integrated motors, which come in three versions: AC synchronous servo motors; brushless DC motors; and stepper motors. The motors, which have built-in power and positioning electronics, already supported CANopen, Profibus DP, DeviceNet and RS-485.

The addition of Ethernet support, allows the motors to be used in deterministic real-time applications using the Ethernet Powerlink, EtherCat or Modbus-IDA protocols. Other protocols, including Profinet and Ethernet/IP, are currently being implemented.

Berger Lahr points out that the transmission of fieldbus protocols via Ethernet allows communications to take place between the fieldbus level and corporate levels and the Internet, using a single network.
