Goodbye Cegelec, hello Quartzelec
Following a management buyout from its French parent a year ago, the Rugby-based electrical engineering company, Cegelec, has been renamed as Quarztelec. The company says it has returned to profitability, and has announced plans to expand its overseas operations.
The business, which grew out several companies including GEC, Alsthom, ScottishPower and Manweb, now employs more than 500 people and offers design, engineering, manufacturing, installation and maintenance services.
"When we became Cegelec in 2001, we were experiencing severe difficulties," recalls managing director, Daniel Laval. "But having taken action to stabilise the business, we are now seeing the benefits. We are now a stable and profitable company with a turnover of £50m."
Laval says that the company plans to recruit more engineers and apprentices over the coming 12 months. It has opened an office in Abu Dhabi and hopes to expand its business in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.
